Lesson #1 – Very true as when your field reps have frustrations over the functionality of their system you can and will lose some of them and once they are gone it is very difficult to get them back.
Lesson #2 – Experience does matter. Direct Sales is a different animal and when people try to take experience from another industry and fuse it into direct sales many times that experience takes the company in the wrong direction. I feel it’s a big reason that some companies have closed. It’s not that they didn’t have a great product to sell. They just wasted money on people that brought bad ideas to the table. They need to listen more to their experienced field people that are right under their nose.
Lesson #3 – It’s all about education. I think most people do not like change and will push back. But if you show them what it is going to do for their business and how to use this new technology it is an easier transition for them.
Lesson #4 – I call it the Hamster Wheel. Reps and companies that are not open to learning new things get stuck running in place and going 90 miles an hour but never get anywhere. It can be the downfall of many reps and also why companies never see any growth.
Lesson #5 – One word… Power Point! It’s your best friend 🙂 And yes! Involving the audience with a hands on lesson really can make the meeting. On the flip side I was at a convention that rolled out an app and everyone pulled out their phones to try it out and the app did not work. It was a disaster. Which is why your choice of a reputable software company like ByDesign is so important.
